About Seema Kapoor
Seema Kapoor is an Indian filmmaker, screenwriter, director, producer and author. Born on 12 May 1959 in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, she grew up in a family closely associated with traditional Indian theatre, literature and music. Her life and work have been shaped by her early exposure to the performing arts, her education in Hindi literature and her experiences across different stages of the Indian entertainment industry.

Early Life and Family Background
Seema Kapoor is the daughter of Madanlal Kapoor and Kamal Shabnam Kapoor. Her father was associated with Parsi theatre and established a travelling theatre company that provided a platform for a large group of performers. Her mother was an Urdu poet, classical singer and teacher. Her maternal family also had connections with literature and the arts, while her paternal grandfather served in the army.
Growing up in this environment, Seema was exposed to theatre, music, poetry and literature from an early age. The family travelled and lived in different places as part of its association with theatre. She spent a significant part of her childhood in Bhawani Mandi, in Rajasthan's Jhalawar district, and also lived in other parts of central India.
Traditional theatre companies faced considerable financial and social challenges as cinema became increasingly popular. Her father's efforts to sustain the company, support its artists and continue its performances had a lasting impact on the family. Seema has spoken about the financial difficulties they experienced and the social attitudes towards families involved in theatre during that period.
Her family background also placed her in close contact with people who later became important figures in Indian theatre and cinema. She is the sister of playwright and director Ranjit Kapoor, actor and television personality Annu Kapoor, and writer and filmmaker Nikhil Kapoor.
Education and Early Interests
Seema Kapoor studied Hindi literature at Aligarh Muslim University. Her education complemented the literary and cultural environment in which she had grown up and provided a foundation for her later work in writing and screen storytelling.
Alongside her studies, she developed an interest in theatre and puppetry. These forms of performance offered her practical experience in movement, expression, characterisation and visual communication. Her early exposure to traditional performance also helped her understand the discipline and collective effort involved in creating a production.
After completing her graduation, she became associated with puppet theatre and performance groups, including the DCM puppet repertory. She subsequently worked in New Delhi's performing arts environment and gained experience through cultural programmes and international puppetry activities.
Her early professional associations included theatre and performance practitioners such as Rajendra Nath, Habib Tanvir, Astad Deboo and Dadi Pudumjee. These experiences contributed to her understanding of different performance traditions and forms of artistic expression.
Personal Life
Seema Kapoor married actor Om Puri in 1990. Their relationship had developed over several years before their marriage. The marriage ended in separation and divorce in the early 1990s.
In interviews, Seema has spoken openly about the emotional difficulties she experienced during this period, including the loss of her unborn child. These experiences became an important part of her personal history and later influenced the development of her autobiographical writing.
She has also spoken about the social attitudes towards divorce at that time and the challenges involved in rebuilding her life. Her account reflects the personal and social circumstances faced by women navigating separation during a period when divorce carried considerable social stigma.
Despite their separation, Seema and Om Puri later re-established contact and maintained a cordial relationship. She has spoken about him in interviews with a sense of personal understanding, remembering both their relationship and the experiences they shared.
Her personal experiences form one part of her life, alongside her family background, education and long involvement in the creative arts.
Writing and Personal Expression
Writing has been an important part of Seema Kapoor's life. Alongside her work as a screenwriter, she has used writing to record personal experiences and reflect on the circumstances that shaped her life.
Her Hindi autobiography, Yun Guzri Hai Ab Talak, was published by Rajkamal Prakashan in 2025. The book brings together memories of her childhood, her family's theatre background, personal relationships and her experiences in the entertainment industry.
The autobiography developed from personal writing that began during a difficult period in her life. Over the years, these reflections grew into a broader account of her experiences and the people and events that influenced her.
The book also records aspects of the traditional theatre world in which she grew up, including the challenges faced by travelling theatre companies and the social conditions surrounding performing artists. Through her account, readers gain insight into both her personal experiences and the cultural environment that shaped her early life.
Professional Outlook
Seema Kapoor's professional experience has included work in theatre, puppetry, television, cinema, documentary filmmaking and writing. Her journey across these fields reflects a sustained involvement in the performing and creative arts.
Her background in literature and traditional theatre has remained an important part of her professional identity. Over time, she has worked in different formats and developed experience in writing, directing and producing.
Her autobiography adds a personal dimension to this history by recording experiences that are not always visible in professional biographies. It provides a fuller account of her family background, personal challenges and the circumstances in which her creative life developed.
Seema Kapoor continues to be associated with filmmaking and writing. Her professional profile brings together her work in the entertainment industry and her experiences as an author, while her published memoir provides a personal account of the life behind that work.
